WHAT IS YOUR EQ?
You may have a high IQ, but how is your EQ (Employability Quotient)? Take this test and find out. For each of the following statements, rate yourself on a scale of 0 to 4 with 0 being the least favorable rating and 4 being the most favorable score. Be as honest with yourself as possible. When you are finished, add up your points and record your score.
A. Professional
- I am a graduate of a college, university or trade school, or I have been otherwise trained to perform a specific job. _____
- My training and/or skills are diverse enough that I can perform more than one type of job. _____
- I am skilled at doing my work and I enjoy doing it. _____
- I am willing to put in extra, unpaid time in order to perform my job more effectively. _____
- I have a neat, well-written, up-to-date resume which can be submitted at a moment's notice. I also have a neat, well-written cover letter to accompany my resume which can be tailored to fit the requirements and circumstances of a specific job. _____
- I have the names and addresses of at least three people who have agreed to serve as professional references, and the names and addresses of at least three people who have agreed to serve as personal references. _____
- I am skilled in the use of a computer. _____
- If I cannot find work in my field, I am willing and able to accept work outside my field. _____
- If I cannot find a job, I am willing and able to consider self-employment as an option. _____
- If I cannot find a paying job, I am willing to do volunteer work related to my field. _____
B. Blindness
- I am comfortable with my blindness, and I can discuss the job accommodations that I may need. _____
- I have good orientation and mobility skills and can travel independently on foot and by using any mode of public transportation in familiar and unfamiliar surroundings. _____
- I have good daily living skills and I can take care of my own personal needs with little assistance from others. _____
- I can communicate with myself and with others effectively on paper. _____
- I have developed a strong network of blind friends and other blind people in my field who can give me support, advice and encouragement. _____
C. Personal
- I know my talents, strengths and weaknesses, and I have realistic and objective goals for my life. _____
- I work to maintain good physical and emotional health and I have a positive self image. _____
- I seek and gracefully accept corrective criticism and advice from others. _____
- I take every possible opportunity to further my education and broaden my experience in all areas of my life. _____
- I am a well-rounded, well-informed person who keeps abreast of current events and trends both inside and outside of my field. _____
- I am an active member of my community and I constantly strive to widen my circle of social and professional acquaintances. _____
- I am articulate and I communicate effectively with others. _____
- My personal appearance is immaculate, especially when I am in public. _____
- I am flexible; I can handle stress effectively and adapt well to change. _____
- I am willing and able to relocate to increase my employment opportunities. _____
- I don't use my blindness or anything else as an excuse for poor work or for not taking responsibility for my own life. _____.
Grading Scale
100 Points Or Above: _____ Superior.
You are extremely mature and well-adjusted and you will have little trouble finding employment. (Very few people will score in this category.)
90-99 Points: _____ Excellent.
You are well-prepared to meet the challenges of the job search process and successful subsequent employment.
70-89 Points: _____ Good.
You may have a few problem areas, but they are unlikely to hold you back as you seek employment.
60-69 Points: _____ Fair, but below average.
Although you may be ready for employment, there are probably a few areas of your development which can use some work in order for you to be truly successful.
59 Points And Below: _____ Poor.
You are not quite ready to seek employment; there are probably several areas of you life which could use some improvement. But don't despair! With some work and perseverance, you can improve your EQ score and increase your possibilities for employment and success in life.
